American baseball coach Casey Stengel once said that “Gettin' good players is easy. Gettin' 'em to play together is the hard part.”


Stengel, whose baseball career spanned almost half a century, managed the NY Yankees from 1949 to 1960, was well known for his witty and humorous quips. He hit the bullseye with the quote above, when talking about team play. And it's easy to extrapolate Stengel's words to the work environment. While it's relatively easy to bring in good professionals, getting a bunch of individually brilliant people to work cohesively as a team is something else altogether.


Working in collaboration towards a common goal is not an exclusively human trait. Lions or wolves, for instance, hunt together to maximize the chance of a kill. The key idea here is that working together produces better outcomes.

A worker who enjoys what they are doing is far more likely to participate and work towards a common goal.
