American baseball coach Casey Stengel once said that “Gettin' good players is easy. Gettin' 'em to play together is the hard part.”
Stengel, whose baseball career spanned almost half a century, managed the NY Yankees from 1949 to 1960, was well known for his witty and humorous quips. He hit the bullseye with the quote above, when talking about team play. And it's easy to extrapolate Stengel's words to the work environment. While it's relatively easy to bring in good professionals, getting a bunch of individually brilliant people to work cohesively as a team is something else altogether.
Working in collaboration towards a common goal is not an exclusively human trait. Lions or wolves, for instance, hunt together to maximize the chance of a kill. The key idea here is that working together produces better outcomes.
Gamified collaboration apps: Definition
One key aspect differentiates pack hunters and professional human teams: Individualism. Animals work together to achieve a kill to sustain their own survival. There's no ulterior motives beyond satisfying a basic need. Human teams, however, are composed of individuals who might or might not have hidden agendas or vested motivations. Because of this, the motivation of an individual to contribute towards the team's goal may be compromised, unlike a pack hunter's single-minded determination. The provision of a gamified work environment may eliminate some of these concerns.
Gamification refers to the introduction of game elements (or 'gameplay') and game mechanics into a system or platform that is not intrinsically a game. These game elements are meant to promote interactivity among users, increase engagement, and enhance the overall experience by creating an idea of 'fun' about the project. A worker who enjoys what they are doing is far more likely to participate and work towards a common goal.
Gamified collaboration apps have begun emerging in the professional market, offering a fun and interactive way for individuals to work together and achieve the objectives set out for the team. These apps present an opportunity to deploy an organized system where the team can perform their tasks in an orderly and efficient manner.
When the work environment is fun and enjoyable, productivity and employee engagement increase accordingly.
Peerion MVP: Working together to create incredible things
HyperionX creates smart products to connect the world, introducing a decentralized, trust-less ecosystem that features a number of automated tools to enable an interactive, gamified experience for Peers, the users of the platform.
Right now, HyperionX is developing its flagship product, Peerion, a gamified collaborative app where fledgling entrepreneurs can come to hone and enhance their skills by solving challenges in a gameful ecosystem.
Peerion is built on several principles specifically aimed at developing entrepreneurship, and it is the combination of these environments that infuse it with such potential.
Entrepreneurs thrive in a challenging and collaborative environment, particularly one that presents real-life problems and a way to solve them via gamified solutions. The minimum viable product (MVP) is the first step of how HyperionX will prove the need for a gamified collaboration app. The initial features included on the MVP are: A marketplace, an interactive course circuit, and a professional matchmaking tool, all linked through their Partner Ambition Loop (PAL), a system that will allow true collaboration to occur by assisting peers as they find the right people for the right task.
The role of gamified collaborative apps in the Gig economy
The workplace is evolving, changing due to technological and societal shifts. In the digital era, people are empowered to work anytime, anywhere. And the way in which people understand and interact with work is also changing.
Technology-enabled human evolution is happening now. People are shifting the way they interact with the work environment by engaging with it differently, bringing issues such as self-management, and unique learning methods to the mix. In this new stage of work evolution, people seek freedom, more control, and a wider choice. Welcome to the gig economy!
Let’s illustrate this with an example, John works full time. He does his work, talks to clients, and goes to meetings. But John has a small family, which in the grand scheme of things, is far more important than any job. So John works, but works in his own terms. He chooses when, and whom to engage professionally with, and when John is done with a client or a project, he moves on to the next. He has condemned the 9 to 5 slog to the burning scrapheap of history, where it belongs.
The Gig economy is about freedom, versatility, and the adaptation of work to one’s personal circumstances. The control is no longer in the hands of the employer. Rather, the individual who is performing the work is in the driver’s seat.
Gamified collaboration apps will play a key role in connecting those individuals working and thriving in the gig economy, as these apps will serve to connect entrepreneurs and other workers directly, without the mediation of costly third-parties which may take large portions of revenue.
The changing landscape of the work environment requires adapting, not only by the workers, but also by those who provide employment opportunities. Unilateral evolution is no good, and collaborative apps provide an ecosystem where work becomes synchronized and unified. Furthermore, the gamification of this environment goes one step beyond, creating an enjoyable aspect to what we used to understand as work.
